New Zealand coastwatchers executed by the Japanese

Seventeen new zealand coastwatchers and 5 civilians were captured in the gilbert Islands during the second world war and were beheaded. A group of coastwatchers kept a 24 hour watch for enemy ships and aircrafts. the main challenge was boredom. During august and september 1942 17 military coastwatchers and five civilians were captured as japanese forces overran the gilbert Island. They were imprisoned on Tarawa atoll they were all beheaded after they had a American air raid on the Island.
